3D Printed Trowel

The spade

I do a lot of activities out in the wilderness. From time to time there are situations where I need to dig a small hole. Usually I have to use a stick or a rock as a spade and it doesn’t work very well. I thought it would be fun (and useful) to design a small and lightweight trowel that I could take with me for these situations.

My first iteration performs well as a trowel, but is annoying to print as it requires a lot of support material.

Version 1

I hate removing supports and really don’t like the surface finish on the part afterwards, so I designed a version that could print without them. It took a bit of thinking about how to do it, but I think the result is quite good.

Version 1

I used in the wild for the first time recently and it performed admirably. It’s small and lightweight enough that I don’t notice it in my bag and it can dig a small hole in no time.

Version 1

You can download the trowel here.
